What we’ll be singing

Music and learning trax

We will be learning three songs this year. Please download the sheet music and the learning trax for your voice part below. Then use the learning trax! You will have a lot more fun if  know the music when you get to the festival. You can bring your sheet music to use for rehearsal time, but no music will be held during the show!

How to read your music

Barbershop sheet music has a bass and treble clef, just like regular choral music. Each part takes a different line of of the music. However, there ARE a few differences, so check out below.

How to read your music
  • Tenors read the treble clef using the notes that have stems going up, usually the top note, but not always. (Sometimes the tenors and leads swap positions!)
  • Leads read the treble clef using the notes that have the stems going down, usually the bottom note, but not always.
  • Baritones read the bass clef using the notes that have stems going up, and notes are sung an octave higher than the note written!
  • Basses read the bass clef using the notes that have stems going down, and notes are sung an octave higher than the note written!

MC script

MCs, or Masters of Ceremonies, are the people who announce parts of a show or an awards ceremony; they can be any combination of guys and girls. We will need two people this year to do MC work between Kokomo and Sweet Caroline

If you want to be considered, auditions will be held during Saturday’s lunch. Melodee and Chera will decide on the two performers who have the best character and chemistry together. The expectation for the MCs is that the script must be memorized, which means if you are selected as an MC on Saturday — when you aren’t singing — you’ll be running lines to get the script off paper (or memorized!)

AAU 2023 Script is here!

AAU Music

Kokomo

Kokomo came together for The Beach Boys for the 1988 Tom Cruise movie Cocktail. The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the same year.

Here is a link to the original The Beach Boys recording.

And this is a link to chorus singing Kokomo, it’s awesome!

When you listen to your part track, use your headphones or set your left speaker on high and the right speaker on low to hear your part dominant. You can also just use your left earbud to hear your part.

Sweet Caroline

This song should be familiar to you! Sung by Neil Diamond, this song reached its chart peak in America in August of 1969. Today the song is an audience participation classic, with the crowd singing along during ball games, wedding receptions, and concerts.

Here is a link to the video (our arrangement is different, but you’ll get the idea!)

Believe

You will perform this song with the members of Alaska Sound Celebration as the closing song for our show. Believe is a song performed by Josh Groban from the 2004 movie, The Polar Express. Songwriters Glen Ballard and Alan Silvestri received a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.
